Linda Biehler

In the interdisciplinary field of marine biology and chemistry I study algal produced polysaccharides. As an organic chemist, I'm interested in the chemical properites of marine carbohydrates like fucose containing sulfated polysaccharides (FCSP) and their reactivity towards other marine biomolecules. In my research I'm developing a new extraction method of the polysaccharide fucoidan, while analysing its chemical composition. Furthermore, I synthesis fluorescently labelled polysaccharides to track their way in the water column. With my work I want to improve our understanding of algal polysaccharides as carbon sink and their role in the ocean carbon pump.
