Geochemical transects in the field or in rock cores constrain the evolution of environmental signals through time. However, constraints are only available in preserved rock so the majority of time may be unrecorded in shallow marine settings - a natural sampling bias. All of timing, frequency and amplitude of environmental signals then become uncertain, and correlations between transects is difficult. This talk will explore the nature of this problem, and present ways to analyse and even overcome the natural sampling phenomenon.
