Dr. Hagen Buck-Wiese, who completed his doctorate in the MARUM-MPI bridge group of Jan-Hendrik Hehemann, receives the BRIESE Prize 2023 in recognition of his outstanding research, which makes a significant contribution to understanding what happens to carbohydrates that marine algae form through photosynthesis and whether the carbon bound in them is removed from the atmosphere in the long term. Buck-Wiese showed for the first time that brown algae secrete a long-lasting sugar polymer as a mucilage, which is hardly decomposed by bacteria and thus becomes an efficient and climate-protecting carbon sink in the sea. The prize, endowed with 5,000 euros, is sponsored by the Briese shipping company and scientifically supervised by the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW).

Jan-Hendrik Hehemann has been awarded the ERC Consolidator Grant, one of the European Research Council's most highly endowed awards. He and engineering scientist Andreas Fischer, also from the University of Bremen, will each receive around 2 million euros for their foundation research in the coming years.
