Accurate age and origin of Heinrich Stadial 1 – Potential analog to modern trends
Heinrich Stadial 1 represents one of the most profound reorganizations of the climate–ocean system during the last deglaciation. Refining its timing and mechanisms is essential for understanding the dynamics and thresholds of abrupt climate change with clear relevance to present-day trends.
Prof. Sarnthein is one of the founding fathers of paleoceanography worldwide. He began his scientific career in the late 1960s, starting with sedimentological studies in arid regions and pioneering work on eolian influx in marine sediments, and went on to shape the field of paleoceanography through fundamental contributions to ocean circulation, millennial-scale climate events, and radiocarbon reservoir ages; over decades, he has published on nearly every major aspect of the discipline, often in collaboration with many of its leading figures.
