Research interests
I am a micropaleontologist and molecular ecologist focused on the biodiversity, ecology, and evolution of foraminifera, particularly in their use as indicators of past marine environments. In my research, I use foraminifera as a model group to investigate broader patterns of marine evolution. By combining molecular techniques, such as molecular taxonomy and metagenomics, with quantitative micropaleontology and morphometry, I aim to understand how marine species evolve, adapt, interact with other species, and spread to new areas. My research aims to gain insights into how marine life responds to global environmental changes.
Cryptic diversity in plankton
My earliest research interest is to investigate how new species emerge in the open ocean. This environment is largely unstructured and nutrient-poor, yet it supports surprisingly diverse ecosystems—a phenomenon known as the "plankton paradox". Part of this diversity is "cryptic diversity"—or hidden diversity—where nearly identical species are genetically distinct. This indicates that much of the diversification process is not visible through traditional morphology-based methods. I am using planktonic foraminifera as model organisms and employing a combination of barcoding and metabarcoding methodologies in my research to better understand how diversity is structured and maintained at this cryptic level.

Biological Invasion
I am also interested in exploring the process of tropicalization in the Mediterranean Sea. This phenomenon involves the transformation of ecosystems as tropical and subtropical species expand toward the poles, while temperate species retract, largely due to climate change. In the Mediterranean, this shift began with the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, which removed a natural biogeographic barrier and allowed a largely one-way influx of Indo-Pacific marine species. To date, over 600 invasive species have been documented, and the process is expected to be amplified by climate change. In my research, I use benthic foraminifera as a model to examine the factors that lead to successful invasions, with a focus on population structure, symbiosis, and tolerance to varying temperature extremes.
Ancient DNA
I am captivated by the emerging field of ancient DNA (aDNA) in marine environments. While aDNA has been widely used to reconstruct past terrestrial ecosystems, its application in marine contexts is still in the early stages. Recent advancements in DNA extraction and sequencing technologies now make it possible to recover the DNA of ancient marine communities from sediments dating back several hundred thousand years. This approach offers vast potential for paleoceanography and paleoecology, as it provides insights beyond those limited to organisms with fossilized remains—a small fraction of past biodiversity. With ancient DNA, we can reconstruct entire ecosystems and understand how they transformed under various conditions, including some that no longer exist today.
