From June 16 to 17, the members of the BMFTR-funded PalMod – German Climate Modeling Initiative project met for the annual General Assembly at MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen. A total of 53 people took part, 48 of them on site and five online. The participants consisted of PalMod project members and members of the Scientific Advisory Board.

The meeting focused on current scientific progress, preparations for the International Science Conference in 2026 and the outlook for the final year of the project. PalMod is in its ninth of ten years and is thus entering its decisive phase.

The aim of the project is to use comprehensive Earth system models to investigate the climate of the past 130,000 years - from the last warm period to the present day - as well as the possible climate future over several millennia. The aim is also to better understand risks such as abrupt climate changes, changes in ocean and atmospheric circulation, the thawing of permafrost or a rapid rise in sea levels.

After the first two phases focused on developing and validating the models, the focus in Phase III is now on carrying out long-term climate simulations under various scenarios. In this way, PalMod aims to answer key questions about climate variability and possible
