Virtual coffee breaks..
April-October2020 - Due to the situation resulting from the Corona pandemic, our group had to find a new way for regular meetings. Therefore, we have once a week a "virtual coffee break" via video conference from our home offices. We use these limited time slots to exchange our experiences with working from home and organising our daily life, and present our recent scientific work to our colleagues.. Stay healthy!
Welcome back Cova!
April 2020 - Our dear colleague Cova Orejas is for a third time here in Bremen to work with our cold-water coral group. Cova is a renowned expert on cold-water coral ecology at the Instituto Español de Oceanografia IEO), Centro Oceanogràfic de les Balears (Palma de Mallorca, Spain). Unfortunately, we can only discuss our joint work via email and video chat as we all have to do home office, including Cova. We hope the situation will relax soon..
Goodbye Hao-zhuang!
March 2020 - Our dear colleague Haozhuang is now back in China. Due to the recent situation resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, he had to leave Germany very suddenly, and we had no time to personally say goodbye as the entire group is working from home. We wish you all the best for your future scientific career! Stay healthy.

Guests from Heidelberg
January 2020 - We like to welcome dear guests from the Institut für Umweltphysik (IUP; University of Heidelberg). René Eichstädter, Andrea Schröder-Ritzrau and Marleen Lausecker vist our group to sample cold-water corals of cores from the Angolan coral mound province collected during RV Meteor expedition M122 "ANNA". In collaboration with our group, they will establish a chronology (U/Th & 14C) and conduct various isotope analyses (Li/Mg, Nd-, Ba-, Li-isotopes) on the coral samples.
Guest from China
November 2019 - We like to welcome a new guest scientist from the College of Marine Geosciences, Ocean University of China (Qingdao, China). Dr. Ziye Li is a paleoceanograph and will work with our group in close collaboration with Mahyar for the following two years. Her project deals with the influence of the Banda Sea temperature on tropical rainfall on orbital and sub-orbital scale.
Geology publication
October 2019 - Our PhD student Leonardo published a study in Geology. He and his co-authors investigated fossil cold-water coral mounds on the Namibian shelf and have determined that a localized coral extinction event occurred around 4,500 years ago. They were able to link this event with a shift in the Benguela upwelling system, and an associated intensification of the oxygen minimum zone in this region. See the press release...
Dr. Veerle Huvenne
October 2019 - We were pleased to welcome Veerle Huvenne from the National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS). Veerle visited our group to discuss potential collaborations for cold-water coral research and she gave an inspiring talk about habitat mapping in submarine canyons using a large range of hydroacoustic devices (MARUM seminars). We hope we can continue a fruitful exchange in the future!
Welcome Emmanuel!
October 2019 - We like to welcome a new member of our working group. Emmanuel Okuma started as a PhD student and will work on core material collected from the Baffin Bay during cruise MSM66. The PhD project is part of the International Research Training Group ArcTrain.
Dr. Cova Orejas
July-September 2019 - We like to welcome Cova Orejas who is visiting our working group for a few months. Cova is a renowned expert on cold-water coral ecology at the Instituto Español de Oceanografia IEO), Centro Oceanogràfic de les Balears (Palma de Mallorca, Spain). She got a funding from the DAAD to work with our group on quantitative faunal analyses based on ROV video footage obtained from Angola.

Goodbye Martina!
April 2019 - In May 2019, Martina will start her new job at the BGR. She spend 5 years in our working group and we will miss her for sure. We wish Martina much success for her new tasks in Hanover!!
Guest from the UK
March/April 2019 - We like to welcome Guillem Corbera who is visiting our working group for a few weeks. Guillem is a PhD student at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS) and he is working on the ecology, physiology and paleo-occurrence of cold-water coral ecosystems in the Alboran Sea. During his stay he is processing CT scan data obtained from cores collected from the Cabliers Bank.
Cruise on Pelagia
March/February 2019 - Jürgen and Rodrigo join a cruise with the Dutch RV Pelagia aiming to study cold-water coral mounds off Namibia and Angola. February 2019 - We like to welcome a new member of our working group. Sinah Teumer will work for the graduate school GLOMAR and will support Tina with the coordination of the course programme for early career researchers.
CT analyses
December 2018 - Dr. Anxo Mena from the University of Vigo (Spain) is visiting our working group for one week to work together with Jürgen on CT data obtained from contourite cores of the Gulf of Cádiz. This work is part of the INPULSE project aiming at the characterization of the overflow related to the Mediterranean Outflow Water (MOW) and the possible link between oceanographic and sedimentary processes in the Gulf of Cádiz continental slope.
Acesta sampling
November 2018 - Dr. Jacek Raddatz from the Goethe-University Frankfurt visited our working group together with his PhD student Nicolai Schleinkofer. They sampled from sediment cores retrieved from cold-water coral mounds off Mauritania shells of the deep-sea bivalve Acesta excavata. In cooperation with Claudia and Jürgen, these samples will be analysed for stable isotopes, element ratios and Bor-isotopes.
Cruise M151 ATHENA
October 2018 - During RV Meteor expedition M151 (Athena), we studied seamounts south of the Azores and their colonization with cold-water corals. The cruise was led by the University of Heidelberg, and Dierk, Claudia and Leonardo joined the cruise. Find out what we discovered during the cruise...

September 2018 - We like to welcome Pierre-Olivier Couette from the Laval University. Pierre is a PhD student of the 2nd cohorte of ArcTrain (Canadian partner) and works on bathymetry data and core material collected from the Baffin Bay.

September 2018 - We like to welcome Luke O'Reilly who is visiting our working group for a few weeks. Luke is a PhD student from the Marine Geology Research Group of the University College Cork and he is working on CT scan data obtained from cold-water coral mounds off Ireland.
Goodbye Gema & Martin
July 2018 - At the end of June, Gema and Martin are leaving our working group. They were both working at MARUM for several years and became valuable personalities of our group. Gema will start a new position at the AWI and Martin will continue his career in Hamburg. We wish both all the best for their future.

New guest from India!
October 2017 - We like to welcome a new guest in our working group. Dharmendra Pratap Singh from the National Institute of Oceanography in Goa (India) will work in cooperation with Mahyar on glacial-interglacial variations of the Indian Ocean Monsoon. His on-year research stay is funded by the DAAD (Programme: Bi-nationally Supervised Doctoral Degrees).

September 2017 - The team of "Once upon a time..." has won the college competion of the Year of Science 2016*2017 sponsored by the Science in Dialog. Their idea: to communicate science and their own research and to share it with the public. They prepared short stories which are about the role of the oceans in climate change and how humans can contribute to protect the seas.

June 2017 - We like to welcome two guests from Iran to our working group. Reza Safaierad and Dariush Noorollahi from the University of Tehran will work in cooperation with Mahyar and Lydie on core material from south-eastern Iran to reconstruct variations in Holocene monsoon rainfall.

Leonardo on Polarstern
April 2017 - Our PhD student Leonardo participates in the RV Polarstern cruise PS105 going from Las Palmas to Bremerhaven. During this trip (11-20 April), a training programme in hydroacoustic measurements will take place, in which 16 students from Germany, Italy, Ireland and the People’s Republic of China participate.

September 2016 - Dharma (main proponent), Sandy, Haozhuang, Leonardo and other colleagues from MARUM won a prize in the frame of the "Hochschulwettbewerb zum Wissenschaftsjahr 2016*17". The project’s idea is to communicate science by creating fairy tales dealing with climate change in the oceans to deepen the dialog between science and society. The final product is an illustrated book translated to different languages.
Hello again
May-September 2016 - For a second time, we welcome our Guest Scientist: Prof. Dr. Gregor Eberli from the RSMAS-CLS, University of Miami. Gregor got a fellowship for a 2-periods research stay from the HWK and is now here to continue his work on the research project: Processes Controlling Cold-Water Coral Systems from the Gulf of Mexico to the Western Atlantic.
Nature Review Paper
May 2016 - Congrats to Mahyar, Matthias and Stephan who just published a Review Paper in Nature. They review evidence from palaeoclimate archives, interpreted through the lens of climate model simulations, to show that monsoonal variability is driven by meridional temperature gradients and that monsoon systems exhibit substantial regional character. See: Mohtadi et al. 2016, Nature 533, 191–199.
Goodbye Stephan..
May 2016 - Unfortunately, we "lost" one of our standing group members. Stephan Steinke started in May a professorship at the newly established Department of Geological Oceanography, University of Xiamen (China). Since 2003, Stephan was working for MARUM focussing on climate change in the western Pacific. We wish you much success!
Welcome Dharma
April 2016 - We like to welcome a new member of our working group. Dharma Reyes Macaya did her Master in Oceanography Sciences at the University of Concepción (Chile). She now started her PhD project "Water Column Variability of the South Pacific during the Pleistocene" which is funded by the DAAD.
New Lophelia-reef
January 2016 - During R/V Meteor cruise M122, we did spectacular discoveries of living cold-water corals off Angola. The corals live there today under extremely low dissolved oxygen concentrations, which are far below those values obtained so far by in situ observations and laboratory experiments. December 2015 - We like to welcome a new member of our working group. Sandy Boehnert started as a PhD student ("Anthropogenic impact on the development of coastal marine ecosystems through the last millennium: comparing presumably high (German Bight) with low impact (Coromandel peninsula, NZ) regions") working within the frame of INTERCOAST.
And the winner is...
Novemver 2015 - A team of scientists from our group (Dierk Hebbeln), GEOMAR Kiel (Christian Dullo), and Senckenberg am Meer Wilhelmshaven (André Freiwald) received an award ("Norddeutscher Wissenschaftspreis 2015") for their joint research on cold-water coral ecosystems. The prize is awarded by the five North German Federal States.

Nature publication
May 2014 - Mahyar, Stephan and co-authors showed that the North Atlantic was forcing tropical Indian Ocean climate in the past. The results of this study are now published in Nature (Nature 509, 76–80 , doi:10.1038/nature13196).

Successful MeBo-cruise
February - March 2014 - Dierk, Claudia and Martin are just back from R/V M.S. Merian cruise "MoccoMeBo" during which they conducted 11 successful MeBo drillings. Supplemented by gravity cores, a total recovery of >500 m of sediments were collected fom various cold-water coral mounds along the Moroccan margin. more...
Quentin Dubois-Dauphin
February 2014 - We welcome our Guest: Quentin Dubois-Dauphin. Quentin is a PhD student at the University of Paris (supervisor: Christophe Colin). He works on U/Th datings and Nd isotopes obtained from cold-water corals of the Mediterranean Sea. He was in Bremen to discuss potential collaboration between our working groups to share coral material and data.
Prof. Dr. Norbert Frank
December 2013 - We welcome our Guest: Prof. Dr. Norbert Frank who is professor at the Institut für Umweltphysik at the University of Heidelberg. Dierk and Claudia have a long-standing cooperation with Prof. Frank originally initiated in the frame of the EU-project HERMES. They published several joint publications on U-series datings on cold-water corals.

November 2013 - We welcome our Guest Scientist from China: Jianguo Liu. Jianguo works as an associate professor at the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology (SCSIO) in Guangzhou. He will be at MARUM for 1 year as a visiting scholar to study clay minerals, grain sizes and element composition of trap sediment samples from the Pearl River, South China Sea.
Visit from Indonesia
November 2013 - We welcome our Guest Scientists from Indonesia: Nazar Nurdin, Mustaba Ari Suryoko, Eko Saputro and Septriono Hari Nugroho. They are scientists from Indonesia (ESDM, LIPI) and are in Bermen to get insight into the MARUM lab facilities for sedimentological studies. Their visit is part of the Bremen-Indonesian collaboration SPICE.
Loubna Terhzaz
November 2013 - We welcome our Guest Scientist: Loubna Terhzaz from the Université Mohamed V-Agdal (Rabat, Morocco). Loubna just started her PhD study (supervisor: Naima Hammoumi) and will work on sediment cores collected during RV Marion Dufresne cruise MD194, which she is sampling during her stay in Bremen. She works in collaboration with Dierk and Claudia.

August 2013 - We welcome our Guest Scientist: Prof. Dr. Gregor Eberli from the Rosenstiel School for Marine & Atmospheric Sciences, University of Miami. Gregor is a sedimentologist and will work together with Dierk & Claudia on cold-water coral related data obtained from the western Atlantic during a joint cruise with RV Maria S. Merian (MSM20-4).

August 2013 - We welcome our Guest Scientist: Dr. Agostina Vertino from the Milano-Bicocca University (Italy). Agostina is a Paleontologist specialised on scleractinian cold-water corals and will work together with Jürgen on fossil cold-water coral carbonates collected from Sicily and Rhodes.

July - December 2013 - We welcome our Guest Student: Dharma Reyes from the Dept. of Oceanography, University of Concepcion (Chile). Dharma is in the final stage of her Master thesis and works on water mass geometry changes that occured off Chile since the LGM. Together with Dierk, Mahyar & Gema she will analyse stable isotope data.

June 2013 - Mahyar (chief scientist), Stephan, Conny, Gema and Riza just retourned from Australia, where RV Sonne cruise SO228 (Kaohsiung-Townsville, 04. May - 23. June 2013) ended after 7 weeks of succesful sediment sampling. The cruise combined three cruise proposals (EISPAC, WESTWIND, SIODP) for research in the Western Pacific... more ...

June 2013 - Dierk and Claudia retourned from a EUROFLEETS cruise with the French RV Marion Dufresne. The cruise GATEWAYS (Cadiz-Lisbon, 10.-21. June 2013) was dedicated to study cold-water corals along the Moroccan margin.
