NFDI4Biodiversity meets NFDI4Earth: Joint Annual Conference 2025 in Bremen
Joint Annual Conference of the consortia NFDI4Biodiversity and NFDI4Earth

For the first time, the two NFDI consortia NFDI4Biodiversity and NFDI4Earth have organized a joint annual conference. Researchers will meet from September 22 to 25, 2025, at MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen. Under the title NFDI4Biodiversity meets NFDI4Earth – Joint Plenary 2025, the event will bring together researchers, data experts, and practitioners working with biodiversity and environmental data. Around 250 participants from across Germany (and beyond) are expected.

Why a National Research Data Infrastructure?
Research data are a key resource for scientific progress – yet they are often scattered across projects, stored in different formats, and lack long-term availability. This makes it difficult to reuse data across disciplines and to analyze them in broader contexts. The German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) addresses this challenge: its goal is to systematically open up, secure, and make research data in Germany accessible on a sustainable basis. In 27 consortia, scientific communities are working to structure their data holdings, connect them, and make them usable across domains.

Two consortia, one goal

  • NFDI4Biodiversity brings together expertise and data from biodiversity research and monitoring. The consortium develops tools, services, and standards to ensure that information on species diversity and ecosystems remains available and usable in the long term.
  • NFDI4Earth focuses on data from the environmental and Earth system sciences. Its aim is to improve the discoverability and interoperability of the diverse datasets of the geoscience community.

Together, the two consortia exemplify the NFDI approach: building the foundations for an open, connected, and sustainable research landscape.

Exchange, networking, and new ideas

The Joint Plenary 2025 will feature a wide range of formats: poster sessions, barcamps, a hands-on kick-off keynote and a software & tools marketplace that gives participants the opportunity to discover digital applications for working with research data. The goal is to share knowledge, explore innovative approaches, and strengthen networks across disciplinary boundaries.

The program is structured into three parts:

  • NFDI4Earth Plenary: 22–23 September 2025
  • Joint sessions of both consortia: 23–24 September 2025
  • NFDI4Biodiversity All Hands Conference: 24–25 September 2025

Participants are free to attend one or several parts of the event, depending on their interests.
