What insights can we derive from past climate states for the future? This question will be addressed by participants at a symposium at MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen, which begins today.

The following topics will be discussed at the symposium over the next three days in plenary lectures and poster sessions:

  • Decoding of environmental signals from past warm climate conditions
  • Marine ecosystems: Interrelation to environmental conditions and biogeochemical processes
  • Causes and impacts of perturbations in the climate-carbon cycle

The focus is on discussion and professional exchange. The invited participants are renowned national and international specialists and earlky career scientists. Together with participants from Bremen, Bremerhaven and Oldenburg, they will discuss topics such as the detailed reconstruction of past eras in Earth history, as well as analytical methods and new approaches to their work.

The international Ocean Floor Symposium series is organized every two years by MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Research as part of the Cluster of Excellence "The Ocean Floor – Earth's Uncharted Interface". The symposia offer a special platform for the exchange and discussion of scientific results on processes on the ocean floor, which forms an important, dynamic interface with far-reaching functions for the entire Earth system. This is the second Ocean Floor Symposium, the first was dedicated to "Understanding element fluxes - processes and budgets" in 2022.
