Research statement

I am a marine botanist with emphasis on ecosystem engineering seaweeds under the impact of environmental change with a strong focus on Arctic fjord ecosystems. My research comprises seaweed ecophysiology, acclimation and adaptation strategies along latitudinal (stress) gradients, mechanisms of range expansion, bioinvasions, competition, carbon sequestration as well as general Polar and Coastal Ecology. Seaweeds are of utmost importance to coastal ecosystem function, providing numerous ecosystem services as food and habitat provision to associated organisms, wave damping, shore consolidation and, furthermore, are among the most efficient absorbers of carbon dioxide; some even regard seaweed as our potential food of the future. In an era of multiple environmental challenges and pressures, fundamental as well as solution-focused applied research on seaweed is an important contributor to understand and safeguard coastal ecosystems worldwide.
