Young voices for the climate
Achim Kopf from MARUM offered a workshop on “Earth System Solutions for CO2 Removal”. The participants enthusiastically discussed the pros and cons of various CO2 storage options for reducing CO2 emissions. Marine and terrestrial approaches were considered, as were technical and nature-based solutions, with a focus on social acceptance, the permanence of CO2 storage, and economic feasibility.
According to Kopf, the dialogue with the participants continues even after the conference: Numerous requests for materials and further discussions show how great the interest and motivation of the younger generation is to become actively involved in climate research.
The event, which is organized every year by LCOY (Local Conference of Youth) Germany at a different location, combines science, politics, and engagement with a festival atmosphere. In addition to lectures and workshops with over 300 speakers, the program included music, swap meets, games, science and poetry slams, and shared meals. The entire event took place in an open, constructive atmosphere that left plenty of room for exchange.
