International Symposium on Maritime Glaciers 2022

The International Glaciological Society (IGS) organizes symposia (or conferences) on different aspects of cryospheric sciences all around the world. In June 2022 the University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau hosted the “International Symposium on Maritime Glaciers”. ESA Living Planet Symposium 2022

The ESA Living Planet Symposium (LPS) took place from 23rd to the 27th of May in Bonn, Germany. I participated in the conference starting from the 25th of May. This was my first big international conference during my PhD. After plenty of online conferences, it was very exciting for me to meet many colleagues in person for the first time. Several thousand participants made it to a lively event with many interesting discussions. The ESA LPS offered a large variety of sessions, talks, discussions, and events during this week.

AC3 Science conference and PhD day

The (AC)³ Science Conference was organized by the Transregional Collaborative Research Centre TR 172 on Arctic Amplification and took place in Potsdam from the 25th to the 28th of October. The Ocean Sciences Meeting (OSM) organized by the American Geophysical Union is known to be the flagship for the ocean sciences. It takes place every two years in the United States. IUGG 2019

The IUGG 2019 (the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics General Assembly) took place in the Montreal Convention Centre in July 2019. Open Global Glacier Model (OGGM) Workshop 2019

During the 4th Open Global Glacier Model workshop the main developer Dr. Fabien Maussion gave an overview and an update of the project status.
Each developer gave a summary of their own contributions to the model, since the last workshop (Innsbruck, May 2018). Anouk and Beatriz gave oral presentations about their work with the model.

European Geosciences Union General Assembly 2019

The EGU General Assembly is the biggest yearly meeting of general Geosciences in Europe. It offers a variety of oral and poster presentation throughout all disciplines, as well as short courses. During the conference we had the chance to present our current research projects, discuss the results with other experts and attend several other presentations inside and outside our field of expertise.

PAST Gateways 2018

The PAST (Paleo Arctic Spatial and Temporal) Gateways is a six year program with a goal to understand and reconstruct Arctic environmental changes. The 2018 conference took place from 16 to 20 April in University of Durham, Durham, England. More than 60 International scientists from Europe, Russia, Canada and the USA were involved in this conference.

European Geosciences Union General Assembly 2018

Beatriz, Lina and I went to the EGU GA 2018, which took place in Vienna. We presented our research at the conference, by either giving a talk or presenting a poster. The Ocean Sciences Meeting 2018

The Ocean Sciences Meeting is one of the largest oceanographic meetings worldwide. In 2018 it was organized by AGU (American Geophysical Union), ASLO (Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography) and TOS (The Oceanography Society). The OSM 2018 took place in the Oregon Convention Centre (Portland, Oregon, USA) in February 2018. AGU Fall meeting 2017

The AGU fall meeting (AGU hereafter) is the largest Earth and Space science meeting worldwide with more than 20000 participants. It took me some time to get settled, but after I had gotten an overview over venue and program, I really enjoyed the ample opportunities for networking and for seeing talks from subjects other than mine. I gave a talk about my PhD research and had interesting discussions afterwards. Other highlights for me comprised talks of First Nation members and an interview with Dan Rather, one of the world's most renowned journalists.

IAPSO-IAMAS-IAGA Joint Assembly 2017

The 2017 Joint IAPSO (International Association for the Physical Sciences of the Oceans) – IAMAS (International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences) – IAGA (International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy) Assembly took place in Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) (South Africa) in August 2017. International Glaciological Society Symposium 2017

The International Glaciological society held its meeting at the University of Colorado with the topic “Polar Ice, Polar Climate, Polar Change”. This was a nice opportunity for present my work on sea ice leads detection from Sentinel-1 SAR images. It was also interesting to listen other presentation and talk to people during poster session about changes in sea ice cover, climate change in polar regions and remote sensing of snow and glacier ice thicknesses.

CESM Tutorial

The CESM tutorial was organized by the NCAR and took place at the Mesa Lab in Boulder, Colorado. Attending the tutorial gave me a better understanding of how the model works and some first hands-on experience with the CESM2.0. Next to that I got a new idea for a modeling experiment during the tutorial.

WE-Heraeus Summer School on Physics of the Ocean 2017

The WE-Heraeus Summer School on Physics of the Ocean 2017 took place in Physikzentrum Bad Honnef (Germany) in July 2017. It was organized by “The Wilhelm und Else Heraeus-Stiftung” and supported by DPG. EGU General Assembly

From the 23th of April 2017 to the 28th of April 2017, I attended the EGU General Assembly in Vienna. It represents the largest European annual event in the field of geosciences and covers a broad variety of topics and many different sessions with several different formats of presentations including talks, poster/PICO presentations, discussions and workshops or smaller splinter meetings.

OGGM workshop

The 2nd OGGM workshop took place at Spiekeroog. Participating in the workshop gave me a better understanding of the current status of OGGM and an insight in the development plans for the model. During the workshop I met new people that work with OGGM and the participants that I already knew I got to know better. Beside getting to know what other were doing with the model I also presented and discussed my own work.

DPG Spring Meeting

The DPG (Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft), department 'Environmental Physics' held its spring meeting at the University of Bremen. Hannah and Aleksei presented posters while Alexandra, Dmitrii and Valentin gave talks about their PhD topics. For all of us, it was a very valuable experience to present our work to an audience with a strong physical background, but not necessarily involved in polar research. We got valuable input and feedback and left the conference with new inspiration and motivation for our PhD projects.

PAST Gateways

I attended the 4th International PAST Gateways Conference in May 2016, a conference that focuses on environmental changes in the Arctic in preinstrumental times.Giving a talk about my most recent results and findings and discussing with many scientists gave me a lot of new impulses on the interpretation and further work. +

Ocean Sciences Meeting 2016

February 21 to 26, 2016 four ArcTrain students from Germany attended the Ocean Sciences Meeting (OSM) in New Orleans, USA. The OSM convenes every two years and provides a venue for a number of international scientists to gain insights into all aspects of oceanography.

2015

VITALS

In October 2015, two ArcTrain students from Germany were invited to give talks on their current PhD work at the VITALS conference in Halifax. The interdisciplinary research group VITALS (Ventilation, Interactions and Transports Across the Labrador Sea) involves scientists from 11 Canadian universities as well as multiple federal government laboratories. +

Forum for Arctic Modelling and Observations

The FAMOS meeting is a very nice conference which connects modellers and observationalists working on sea ice. This year its focus was on high resolution sea ice modelling and observational data products useful for model validation, so it met exactly my needs. +

10. Deutsche Klimatagung

I attended the "10. Deutsche Klimatagung" in Hamburg, Germany from 21-24 September with four days of interesting talks and posters. Thanks to ArcTrain funding I was able to attend and gave a poster presentation with the title " Holozäne Klimavariabilität im Nordatlantik: Zustandswechsel und quasi-dekadische Oszillation in einem Klimamodell " within the session "Klimawandel – global bis lokal". +

ArcTrain Floating University on RV POLARSTERN cruise PS93.1

The ArcTrain Floating University offered us the opportunity to participate in research cruise PS93.1 with RV Polarstern in the Arctic. Onboard we were able to take part in all research activities that were carried out. The scientific program included oceanographic and atmospheric measurements as well as biological and geological sampling focusing on recent and past conditions in the Fram Strait. In addition to the practical work in the diverse laboratories, different seminars and talks took place. +

Leopoldina Symposium "Deglacial changes in ocean circulation and atmospheric CO2"

Four days of interesting talks and posters at the Leopoldina Symposium in Halle/Germany including a penumbral solar eclipse. The symposium offered many insights into the last deglaciation with focus on the carbon transfer between ocean, atmosphere and land. +

2015 ASP Field School "Snow Covered Sea Ice"

We all know by now that the Arctic is changing rapidly, and personally I learned many ways to physically describe sea ice over the course of the last year. But to learn what this change really means for the people having to cope with it and how the parts of the real world look and behave, that hide behind my formulas, I attended a field course in Greenland on the topic of snow covered sea ice. Not only did I learn much about the object of my work, but especially the insights into the Greenlandic life and culture really broadened my horizon. +

2014

Conference "Arctic Change 2014"

The Arctic is currently experiencing rapid systemic changes with multiple economic, social, political, and security implications that are still imprecisely understood. The Arctic Change 2014 offered many insights into a variety of Arctic research areas. By addressing numerous environmental, social, and political issues within the Arctic region we learned a lot about the challenges indigenous people are facing already today and in the future. Additionally, we obtained a more precise insight into how the Arctic and humans influence each other. +

ISTAS workshop

I attended the ART Science Workshop “Integrating spatial and temporal scales in the changing Arctic System: towards future research priorities” (ISTAS). The workshop was divided into interdisciplinary plenary sessions and six parallel sessions. Besides the sessions, so called priority sheets should be written in parallel sessions (in my case: paleo-session) to phrase expectations for future Arctic research. These proposals shall contribute to the ICARPP III Conference in Toyama/Japan in April 2015. +

Summer School "Arctic in Anthropocene"

Potsdam Summer school “Arctic in Anthropocene” turned out to be an adventure. I met a lot of people one way or another working with the Arctic region: natural, social and political scientists; people working in the area of Law and Governance, public organizations. I also got a nice scientific overview of the research and challenges in the Arctic. Ocean Sciences Meeting 2014

Around 5600 scientists from all over the world in different marine science disciplines participated in the Ocean Sciences Meeting 2014 in Honolulu, Hawaii USA from 23-28 February. Thanks to ArcTrain funding I was able to attend and gave a poster presentation with the title "Variability of the North Atlantic Current: high resolution model data versus in-situ measurements" within the session "North Atlantic ocean dynamics: from natural fluctuations to externally forced response". +

CASE Open conference "The Changing Arctic and Subarctic Environment"

From February 4th to 6th I attended the final meeting of the CASE project, which was held in Bordeaux, France. With 12 PhDs presenting their final results and many guest speakers this conference gave a broad overview over climate and environmental reconstructions in the (sub-) Arctic. +

GEOTOP Graduate Class in Micropaleontology

In January this year I took part I in a GEOTOP Marine Palynology course at my Canadian host institution, the University of Quebec at Montreal. The course was focussed on dinoflagellate ecology and their use as paleoenvironmental proxies. I also represented the other ArcTrain students at a Baffin Bay Seminar day, during which I presented the work we as ArcTrain are planning to do in the area as well as finding out what academics from around the world are currently researching there. +
