We're excited to have you join our vibrant community of researchers!

As an early-career researcher, you're starting an exciting journey of discovery, innovation, and collaboration. At MARUM, we foster a supportive environment where new ideas thrive, and diverse perspectives drive progress.

You will find opportunities to engage with experts, expand your skills, and contribute to cutting-edge research. Whether you're looking for mentorship, resources, or a network of like-minded peers, the MARUM Research Academy is here to support you every step of the way.

To help you settle in, you are welcome to accept an invitation to a personal welcome chat with Tina, the programme manager of the Research Academy. She will introduce you to the opportunities available to researchers at MARUM and answer any questions you may have about your new workplace, personal development opportunities or settling into life in Bremen.

We kindly ask new colleagues to fill in an onboarding form for us:

Welcome Buddy Programme

Early-career researchers starting at MARUM will be assigned a 'buddy', who will be a researcher in the same status group but with a little more experience.

The buddy programme aims to promote peer support and help new colleagues feel welcome.

The more experienced researcher will initially contact their new colleague and invite them to meet for a drink or lunch to get to know each other. The two buddies can then decide whether to arrange further meetings.

Administrative Matters for Doctoral Researchers

The formal start of your doctorate is the acceptance by the doctoral commission of the faculty. All documents required are stated in the doctoral regulation (“Promotionsordnung”) of the respective faculty.

While the acceptance by the doctoral committee is obligatory, the following enrollment as a doctoral candidate (“Immatrikulation”) is non-compulsory. Enrollment is necessary to take advantage of certain social benefits and to use certain university facilities and equipment. Enrollment is possible at any time, also in the middle of the semester. The university charges a contribution per semester; see here for current fees. Often, the decision is a financial one, and many doctoral researchers decide against enrollment. For further information and for the enrollment procedure, please refer to the Student Office (SfS).
