Prof. Antje Boetius is moving to the renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) in the USA next year, where she will take over the post of its president. MBARI is one of the most renowned institutes for marine research and technologies. Boetius is currently Director of the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) and Professor at the University of Bremen; she is also closely associated with MARUM’s Cluster of Excellence “The Ocean Floor – Earth's Uncharted Interface”. Her new position will not affect this close collaborative relationship – MBARI has long been a close partner of MARUM, especially in the development of deep-sea technologies such as the remotely operated diving robots used at MARUM.

MARUM-Director Prof. Kai-Uwe Hinrichs: “I am very happy for Antje; MBARI is the perfect setting for realizing her scientific goal and for being more involved in research. Of course, we will miss her here in Bremen and in the German marine science community. At the same time, I look forward to the new perspective for intensified collaboration between MBARI and MARUM in the area of underwater technologies.”

Antje Boetius will remain in close contact with the region, the German marine research community, and international policy advising as a Collaborating Professor for the University of Bremen and as a member of the Bremen Cluster of Excellence.
