Research Interests

  • Autonomy for mobile underwater robotic systems with a focus on navigation and control
  • robust and scalable autonomy for long-term environmental observations
  • Mobile underwater robot system design for sustainable monitoring
  • Novel, potentially bio-informed, solutions for sensors and actuators to develop minimally invasive monitoring systems

Projects

SPIRULA 3D

SPIRULA lander and vehicle with circle involute path and circle involute surface on which the SPIRULA vehicle can move when it's tether is taught

SPIRULA (SPiraling Intelligent Robotic Underwater monitoring pLAtform)

With SPIRULA we are developing a robust long-term monitoring system with reduced a foodprint in terms of monetary expenses and logistics. A key aspect is the development and use of a hybrid system consisting of a static lander (approx. 2 m x 2m x 1.5m in size) and a small tethered mobile autonomous vehicle (approx. 1m x 0.4 m x 0.6 m in size and with approx. 37 kg dry weight). This hybrid approach enables the shared use of the significant temporal monitoring capacity of static landers and of the increased spatial monitoring capacity of mobile underwater ...
