The MARUM Research Academy's Advisory Board provides expert advice and recommendations on the academy’s strategic objectives and overall direction. The board regularly reviews the academy’s concepts, actions, and outcomes to ensure academic excellence, strategic relevance, and strong connections with MARUM's external cooperation partners, serving as a key quality assurance mechanism.

The areas of responsibility of the Advisory Board include

  • consultancy on strategic issues and conceptual further development,
  • discussion of the annual report,
  • recommendations on the event programme, the service concept and specific measures,
  • contribution of experience from different academic fields and cultures.

Composition

one member of the MARUM directorate

4 senior scientists and/or professors and/or research group leaders who are not members of the MARUM directorate or Research Academy team

2-3 postdoctoral researchers

2-3 doctoral researchers

We encourage a composition with a good balance of diversity in terms of experience, internationality, and gender.
If possible, one substitute per status group should be appointed.

Appointment

  • every 2 years by the MARUM Research Academy
  • new members can be appointed in between the 2 years if others have dropped out
  • the MARUM Research Academy will inform the Center Council about any changes in the composition of the advisory board
  • terms of office are limited to two
  • members of the directorate do not need to be elected

Chair:
The Advisory Board elects a chair from among its members. Ideally, this role should be offered to a senior scientist or research group leader early in their role, to give them the opportunity to gain experience in committee work.

The chair’s primary role is to facilitate the effective functioning of Advisory Board meetings. This includes leading discussions, ensuring meetings stay on track, and that all voices are heard. They assist the Research Academy team in preparing meeting agendas. The chair oversees the board’s role in quality assurance, such as reviewing annual reports and formulating recommendations for future improvements.

Meetings:
The Research Academy team will invite the advisory board to a meeting at least once a year. The board members will receive invitations four weeks in advance. They will also receive an annual report on the work and achievements of the Research Academy to serve as the basis of the discussion.
