As a researcher, networking is an essential tool that can significantly enhance your career and contribute to the advancement of your field. By connecting with colleagues, peers, and experts in your area of study, you can gain access to valuable resources, expertise, and opportunities. Networking allows you to stay updated on the latest developments, share knowledge, and collaborate on projects, ultimately leading to the exchange of ideas and the creation of new research opportunities. Furthermore, building relationships with other researchers can lead to mentorship, job opportunities, and access to funding, ultimately helping you to achieve your goals and make meaningful contributions to your field.

Beyond its professional benefits, networking can also have a profound impact on your personal happiness and well-being. By connecting with like-minded individuals who share your passions and interests, you can build a sense of community and belonging. This can be especially important for researchers who often work independently, providing a much-needed outlet for social interaction and support. Through networking, you can establish lasting friendships, find common ground with colleagues, and even discover new hobbies and interests outside of your research. By prioritizing your social connections, you can cultivate a more fulfilling and balanced life, both in and out of the lab.

At MARUM, we offer and support all kinds of networking events:

    • The weekly MARUM Café, a meeting for everyone working at MARUM on the bridge between the MARUM II and III buildings, Tuesdays at 10.00 hrs. Coffee, tea and biscuits are provided. Please bring your own mug.

    • In the MARUM Research Seminar, you can not only learn about exciting research but also meet other researchers

    • Annual conferences, such as the Ocean Floor Symposium, the Postdoc Day, the Bremen Doctoral Researcher Symposium on Marine Sciences or the ECORD Summer School.

    • Our expert and transferable skills courses and the free German classes for international colleagues also offer lots of opportunities to meet marine science researchers from MARUM and our collaboration partners. We always allow plenty of time for coffee breaks to encourage informal conversation.

    • Doctoral researchers can receive funding to participate in conferences and conduct placements at research institutions abroad, and are thus encouraged to actively build a network.

    • An annual summer party for all staff is organised by the directorate. Other social gatherings are regularly organised by, e.g. the doctoral and postdoctoral researcher representatives.
