The Cluster of Excellence ›The Ocean Floor – Earth’s Uncharted Interface‹ has implemented a multifaceted approach for the exchange with the general public and stakeholders. This approach involves all three domains of knowledge transfer: information, dialogue, and participation. Particular attention is given to translating complex scientific information into generally understandable core messages, adjusted to the target-groups.

Transfer activities

The scientific knowledge generated within the Cluster about the oceans and the ocean floor is highly relevant to current societal challenges such as global climate change, biodiversity decline, or the (over-)exploitation of living and non-living marine resources. Cluster members therefore are actively engaging at the science-policy-society interface to facilitate the application of Cluster findings in policy making and management.

Dialgue on "Climate Change & Biodiversity" for political decision-makers

The dialogue series "Focus on the sea" aims to facilitate an open dialogue between politics, public administration, NGOs, business and society with the scientific community.

+

Actionable knowledge for evidence-based policy making

Agreement on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction.

+

New concept for the protection of marine biodiversity

The AGELESS consortium aims to provide political advice for the establishment of climate-smart marine protected areas.

Further activities:

Science Communication activities

Through diverse measurements the Cluster members aim to create points of contact between science and everyday life to increase awareness for the crucial role of the ocean in the Earth system as a first step to broader societal discussions and more informed decisions. The formats mostly not only share information and provide hands-on materials on marine research but offer an accessible, participatory, and diverse interaction.

Interactive exhibition “3,688 meters below sea level"

Visitors were taken on an interactive journey to the ocean floor and were able to see exhibits from the depths of the oceans, such as fragments of a black smoker.

+

Explore Science "Climate and Environment"

Hands-on activities and workshops for children and school classes on the topics “Our climate – then, now and in the future” and “How the sea moves us – life in and around water”.

+

Podcast "The Ocean Floor – Earth's Uncharted Interface"

Acoustically diving into the deep sea and to unique ecosystems – that's what the MARUM-episode of the podcast “Exzellent erklaert – Spitzenforschung für alle” is about!

+

Shaping climate education with and for schools

The MARUM school project “Climate – I'm changing!” supports schools in dealing with the topics climate protection and sustainability in a science-based way.

+

Science and Theater

Cooperation with the Bremen Theater for the play “Wasserwelt” including the provision of photo and video recordings plus accompanying exhibition in the Theatercafé.

+

Science goes PUBlic

Scientists present their work in an informal atmosphere in different pubs in Bremen and Bremerhaven. Afterwards, people can ask questions or discuss with the scientists. +

Live Dive during an expedition

The dives of the diving robot ROV MARUM-QUEST can be followed live on your own device.

+

Expedition reports

The logbooks allow readers to be part of the expedition: Authentic reports from cruise members provide insights into current scientific issues as well as life on board.

+

Citizen science project “BlueDOT” aims to fill data gaps

The diving community is in the spotlight of a new research project. With the help of divers, continuous temperature data in the Mediterranean sea will be collected and analyzed.
