Career Development and Research Independence

Supporting postdocs in becoming independent researchers is a key priority for us. MARUM supports you with individual career coaching, exploring both academic and non-academic pathways, or developing a research agenda. The MARUM Research Academy offers guidance and workshops on topics like proposal writing.

Skills Training and Competency Building

The MARUM Research Academy offers training opportunities across key skill areas. The course programme is flexible and based on your demand. Additional training is offered by the University of Bremen/BYRD.

Mentoring and Networking

A mentoring programme pairs postdocs with experienced researchers who provide guidance on career progression, navigating academic life, and building networks. MARUM fosters networking initiatives such as the annual MARUM Postdoc Day.

Teaching and Supervision

During this career phase, gaining teaching and supervision experience is seen as a major professional achievement. Postdoctoral researchers have the opportunity to teach specialised courses in the doctoral researcher programme and to receive training in didactics from the university. They can become members of doctoral researchers’ thesis committees or act as mentors to get involved in the supervision of master's students and doctoral researchers.

Representation and Advocacy

Postdocs at MARUM are fully integrated into the researcher community. The elected postdoc representatives are part of the governance structure and are involved in developing the professional development programme. Initiatives for events organised by the postdoc community, such as seminars, workshops, or the annual Postdoc Day, are highly appreciated and supported.

Well-Being

Promoting the well-being of our postdocs is an important concern for us. We have given ourselves rules to work by at MARUM. These are set out in our Code of Conduct. The MARUM Research Academy offers mental health courses and confidential advisory and coaching services.
