At MARUM, you are part of a structured graduate programme that offers an abundance of support measures while giving you full flexibility with your choices. Your self-appointed thesis committee will offer advice on your research project whenever you need it.

Skill Development and Professional Growth

To ensure you have the tools you need, the MARUM Research Academy offers an extensive training programme that includes expert and methods courses as well as transferable skills training to support your professional and personal development as a researcher and to prepare you for the next steps in your career. The course programme is flexible and based on your demand. Additional opportunities are provided by the University of Bremen/BYRD and by our marine partner institutions.

Networking and Collaboration Opportunities

At MARUM, we understand that networking and collaborations are essential to academic growth. We organise regular networking events and encourage participation in meetings and conferences. The MARUM Research Academy offers funding to foster networking and collaboration. Doctoral researchers can submit short proposals to acquire funding for participation in external courses, scientific conferences or placements in other research institutions. They can also benefit from MARUM's strong ties with other marine research institutions.

Community Engagement and Representation

Doctoral researchers at MARUM are integral to our vibrant research community. As a doctoral researcher, you have the opportunity to contribute to the governance structure and participate in shaping the professional development offerings at MARUM. Elected representatives from the doctoral researcher community actively influence policy and contribute to events such as seminars, workshops, and the annual Doctoral Researcher Symposium, ensuring that your voice is heard and valued.

Well-Being

Promoting the well-being of our doctoral researchers is an important concern for us. We have given ourselves rules to work by at MARUM. These are set out in our Code of Conduct. The MARUM Research Academy offers mental health courses and confidential advisory and coaching services.
