MARUM Research Academy
Funding
On this page, we provide information about funding opportunities for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers who are already working at MARUM. We do not offer funding for positions unless they are advertised on our jobs webpage.
Funding for Doctoral Researchers
Support of mobility
The MARUM Research Academy can provide funding to support the mobility of doctoral researchers in the following categories:
- Conferences
- Training not available at MARUM
- Research placement abroad
- Internship at a company / NGO
Funding usually covers travel costs, accommodation, a daily allowance, visa fees and abstract fees. If the reviewers have not made any major comments on your funding proposal for conference participation, a research placement or an internship, you can receive funding to cover 75% of the total costs (you will need to cover the remaining 25% through project funds or other sources). In the case of external courses, costs can be covered in full.
You are eligible for this funding line if you are a member of the Research Academy's Graduate Programme and if youdon't have access to a similar funding line through another research training programme, SFB or similar. Furthermore, we expect that you have regularly submitted the minutes of meetings with your thesis advisory committee (TAC).
If you receive funding from the Research Academy, please note that you are expected to submit a report with photos no later than two weeks after returning to Bremen.
To apply for funding, please read the guidelines carefully and use the form provided on the right.

Please note that applications must be submitted no later than 9 weeks before the beginning of the proposed funding period.
Monika Segl Program for the advancement of female doctoral researchers at MARUM in the field of climate research
This programme is exclusively for female doctoral researchers working on a climate research project. It enables a six-month extension to be granted to a three-year doctoral research project, allowing the selected candidate to extend their work on the project and increase their professional skills and achievements.
Calls for proposals are announced twice per year in February and August via the internal MARUM mailing list.
Impulse Grants from the Central Research Development Fund by the University of Bremen
Doctoral candidates of the University of Bremen (i.e. doctoral researchers who will submit and defend their doctoral thesis at the University of Bremen) can apply for funding for activities that clearly contribute added value within the context of the doctoral research.
See https://www.uni-bremen.de/en/research/support-for-researchers/calls/crdf-calls.html for more information on this funding line.

Please note that if you make bookings before you have received the decision about your funding proposal from the Research Academy, we cannot guarantee that you can get your costs reimbursed.
Funding for Postdoctoral Researchers
Impulse Grants from the Central Research Development Fund by the University of Bremen
Under this funding line, you can get your next postdoc project funded. The deadline is once a year, usually in April.
Postdoctoral researchers at the University of Bremen (that MARUM is a part of) can also apply for funding for independent, focus, exploration, or collaborative projects.
