Towards a responsible use of AI tools in academic writing – challenges in the supervision process

Artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT and others are increasingly being used
by students and researchers in academic writing. These technologies offer
opportunities for productivity, creativity, and support—but they also raise questions, for
example, about authorship, originality, and research integrity.

In this workshop, we will reflect on the opportunities and challenges that arise from using AI tools in academic writing, as well as the difficulties supervisors may encounter when moderating writing processes and reviewing texts. We will share good practice examples and develop ideas for our own supervisory work.

Topics could include:

  • Capabilities and limitations of AI writing tools
  • Ethical and responsible use in academic contexts
  • Detecting texts written with the help of AI tools
  • Practical approaches for fostering critical reflection and transparency

You are welcome to bring additional topics to the workshop. If you send us your topics in advance, this will give us the chance to prepare them accordingly.
