The Ocean Floor
Support of Early Career Researchers
The Excellence Cluster's Support Programme for Early Career Researchers provides training, resources, and career guidance to help them develop self-responsibility and academic independence. The programme fosters current and future excellence in ocean-floor research within a stimulating multidisciplinary and international environment with outstanding research conditions at the University of Bremen and the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg, as well as associated partner institutes in Bremen and Bremerhaven.
The unique combination of specialised education in ocean-floor science, transferable skills training, international networking, and professional development support enhances the career prospects of our early career researchers, both in academia and across the broader job market.
Doctoral and postdoctoral researchers at the Cluster of Excellence benefit from being part of a group of early-career researchers who learn from each other, interact through shared activities, and develop a sense of belonging.

Training and Support
The cluster offers a regional network of experts and infrastructure as well as support through a programme tailored to the needs of ECRs to enable careers and transitions to the next career phase. We promote early independence, team mentoring, networking and equal access to scientific training and career paths.
Once the first doctoral and postdoctoral researchers have started their positions in the Excellence Cluster in 2026, specific offers will be posted on this webpage. These will include training, retreats, and social events.
Events planned for 2026 include:
- Ocean Floor Early Career Researcher Forum (a retreat for all doctoral and postdoctoral researchers in the EXC to get to know each other and learn about the Cluster's mission and achievements)
- Courses on Good Scientific Practice, Lifting Off with Your Research Project, Science Communication, etc.
In addition, ECRs can benefit from the graduate and postdoctoral programmes of the institutions involved in the Excellence Cluster
MARUM Research Academy, MARUM - Center for Marine Environmental Sciences, University of Bremen
OLTECH - Graduate School for Science, Medicine and Technology, University of Oldenburg
and at our partner institutions
BYRD - Bremen Early Career Researcher Development, University of Bremen
